Summary
- A woman was critically injured off Sydney's Coogee Beach on Saturday.
- This incident marks the fourth fatal shark attack this year in Australia.
- Shark attacks have increased due to population growth and popular water activities.

A woman has been critically injured in a shark attack off Coogee Beach in Sydney on Saturday, June 13, 2026. The victim, believed to be in her 30s, suffered severe leg and arm wounds during the 11:15 a.m. incident. Bystanders rescued her from the water and provided first aid until paramedics arrived. She was then airlifted to a hospital in critical condition.
This event escalates concerns as it follows a series of recent shark encounters. Three spearfishing divers have been fatally attacked since May 16, bringing the national toll to four fatalities this year. These incidents are becoming more common, averaging between two and three fatal attacks annually since 2000.
Recent fatal attacks include Daniel Turpin, 35, off Michaelmas Island on June 6, 2026, and Michael Jensz, 39, near the Great Barrier Reef on May 24, 2026. Steve Mattabonni, 38, was also fatally mauled off Perth on May 16, 2026. An earlier fatal attack occurred in January 2026 when a 12-year-old boy died following a bull shark attack in Sydney Harbor.
Australia has seen an increase in shark attacks over decades, attributed to population growth and the rising popularity of activities like surfing and scuba diving. Last year, five fatal shark attacks were recorded nationwide.
