Sydney Floods: Truck Swallowed by Giant Pothole
27 Feb
Summary
- A large pothole in Sydney's CBD swallowed a delivery truck.
- Ten businesses and a school were left without water.
- Heavy rainfall preceded the burst pipe and subsequent sinkhole.

A significant burst water pipe in Sydney's central business district created a large pothole, which tragically engulfed a Coles delivery truck on Friday. This incident occurred at the intersection of College Street and Prince Albert Road, leading to water supply disruptions for ten businesses and St. Mary's Cathedral College. The severe weather, which included a 100mm downpour over three hours from Thursday night into Friday, is believed to have contributed to the pipe's failure. Emergency services responded to numerous incidents across the Sydney area due to the heavy rainfall, with 42 flood rescues conducted. Prince Albert Road remains closed as Sydney Water crews work to repair the main and excavate the affected area. The severity of the weather caught NSW SES by surprise, resulting in over 650 jobs and many outstanding requests for assistance, including flood rescues and property damage. The weather also prompted a shark warning due to increased activity and murky waters along the coast.
