On the afternoon of the incident, an off-duty lifeguard and three on-duty lifeguards observed a surfer signaling distress. Responders arrived to find Britz unconscious and not breathing. Lifeguards initiated a rescue, bringing him to shore and beginning life-saving measures. Paramedics continued advanced life support care before transporting him to a local hospital in critical condition, where he later died.
The conditions at Ocean Beach were exceptionally dangerous due to a rare late-spring west swell. This swell generated double-overhead waves, a phenomenon more typically seen in winter. Ocean Beach was described as resembling a "washing machine cycle" with unusually large and numerous waves.
Friends of Britz, who was known for his love of the ocean, expressed shock. His wife reportedly indicated that preliminary findings did not show water in his lungs, casting doubt on drowning as the sole cause of death. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has been contacted for comment.
