A significant wildfire has spread across more than 80 hectares on the Suffolk coast, leading to the declaration of a major incident. The blaze, described by witnesses as 'apocalyptic,' is burning just a few miles from the Sizewell B nuclear power station, though authorities state it poses no current risk to the facility.
This event follows a declaration of drought across half of England, including the East Anglia region, and Wales. July has proven to be the busiest month on record for wildfires across England and Wales, with firefighters responding to 393 incidents, placing considerable strain on resources.
Experts attribute the increase in wildfires to the climate crisis, which causes 'whiplash' weather patterns, leading to rapid drying of vegetation. This increases the susceptibility of dry fuel to ignition and the intensity of fires once they start. France, Spain, and Turkey are also currently experiencing major wildfires.
Hundreds of residents were evacuated from homes and a caravan park near Dunwich Heath. The fire has caused considerable damage to the RSPB's Minsmere nature reserve, impacting habitats for rare bird species. Efforts continue to manage the fire, with weather conditions and water-dropping helicopters aiding the response.
