Students Risk Rock Falls on Dorset Coast
19 Mar
Summary
- Geology students studied unstable cliffs despite warning signs.
- A 500-tonne rockfall occurred at West Bay in January.
- A tourist died in a rockfall at Burton Bradstock in 2012.

A group of over 40 geology students and staff recently conducted a field trip to West Bay in Dorset, focusing on the highly unstable cliffs. Despite numerous warning signs indicating the danger of regular rock falls, the students gathered on the narrow beach, just yards from the cliff base. This took place in an area known for its geological hazards, including a substantial 500-tonne rockfall in January that collapsed onto the beach.
The incident at West Bay, also featured in the TV drama Broadchurch, highlights ongoing safety concerns. The January rockfall significantly altered the landscape, requiring coastguard intervention to ensure no one was trapped. Rockfalls in this region are frequently attributed to heavy rainfall weakening the ancient sandstone.
Dorset Council consistently advises the public to heed warning signs and maintain a safe distance from cliff bases due to the unpredictable nature of these collapses. Tragically, the dangers of these cliffs were underscored in 2012 when a 22-year-old tourist lost her life after being caught in a rockfall at nearby Burton Bradstock.
