Panic briefly gripped Varode village as news emerged of a tourist bus carrying school students catching fire on Sunday. The incident happened near Devadanapatti in Tamil Nadu's Theni district when the bus, en route to Munnar after visiting Kodaikanal, experienced a rear tyre burst.
The loud burst was immediately followed by smoke and sparks, prompting the teachers and staff to swiftly evacuate the 45 students and three other adults. The bus was then rapidly consumed by flames.
Fire and rescue services personnel worked for nearly 30 minutes to extinguish the blaze. While the bus and all personal belongings were lost, a major tragedy was averted as everyone on board escaped unharmed.
Police are investigating the cause of the fire. A replacement bus was provided by the travel agency to bring the students back to Ottapalam, with locals offering assistance.
