Portugal & Spain Brace for More Floods as Marta Hits
8 Feb
Summary
- Storm Marta brings warnings of fresh floods and 110 km/h winds.
- Over 26,500 rescuers deployed in Portugal amid storm chaos.
- Damage in Portugal already exceeds €4 billion from recent storms.

Portugal and Spain are facing renewed flood threats as Storm Marta, the third major storm in recent weeks, impacts the Iberian Peninsula. The storm has prompted extensive warnings for potential inundations, with over 26,500 rescuers mobilized in Portugal. Authorities anticipate gusts reaching 110 kilometers per hour, alongside risks of landslides and flash floods.
This latest deluge follows significant damage from previous storms. Storm Kristin alone resulted in five deaths, hundreds of injuries, and widespread power loss. Storm Leonardo claimed one life and necessitated the evacuation of 1,100 people. In total, Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro reported damage exceeding €4 billion.
In Spain, particularly Andalusia and the northwest, authorities issued orange alerts for heavy rain and violent storms. While the rainfall from Marta is expected to be less extreme than from Storm Leonardo, previous downpours caused mass flooding and landslides, forcing over 10,000 evacuations.
