A Spalding County deputy, Joe Crumpton, 62, died following a medical emergency that resulted in a vehicle crash Tuesday evening. Reports indicate Crumpton experienced a medical event while driving, causing his vehicle to leave the roadway. The incident occurred without any police pursuit.
Emergency responders attempted CPR and defibrillation at the scene and en route to Fayette Piedmont Hospital, but life-saving efforts over an hour were unsuccessful. The Spalding County Sheriff's Office is awaiting the GBI Crime Lab's findings to determine the exact cause of death.
Deputy Crumpton had been with the Sheriff's Office since May 2023 and was assigned to the Detention Division. He was a U.S. Army veteran, as was his wife. Funeral service details are forthcoming, and the Sheriff's Office expressed gratitude for community support.
