Firefighter slams Shrewsbury station road chaos
9 Mar
Summary
- New road layout causes unnecessary delays for fire service.
- Shropshire Council spent £3.8m on controversial changes.
- Petition with 6,800 signatures demands road return.

Emergency service response times in Shrewsbury are being significantly hampered by a controversial new road layout near the railway station, a firefighter has reported. Rob Cartwright highlighted that traffic congestion, exacerbated by the reduced lanes and cycle path, is causing unnecessary delays and pressure on emergency drivers.
Shropshire Council invested around £3.8 million of government funds to transform Castle Foregate into a single lane, incorporating a cycle path and a 'floating' bus stop. This construction did not involve consultation with the Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service, which is located less than half a mile away and frequently uses the route.
Firefighters have expressed concerns about vehicles mounting kerbs to avoid them, creating risks for pedestrians. A petition signed by approximately 6,800 individuals is urging the council to restore the road to its prior configuration. A review by a cross-party group of councillors indicated that the works proceeded without adequate political oversight or planning. The floating bus stop has also been identified as non-compliant with national standards due to its narrowness.
Shropshire Council stated that its officers are reviewing a road safety audit and preparing an independent safety review. Any modifications would depend on funding, resources, and consultation. The council has acknowledged constructive dialogue with the fire service and is discussing potential solutions with the design team to improve navigation around the bus stop island.
