Two Shelby County deputies, Edward Owens and Israel Muhammad, were honored for their heroic rescue of two young boys from an icy pond. The incident occurred on January 30th at the Southwind Lakes Apartments in Southeast Shelby County. The seven- and 12-year-old brothers fell into the frigid water when the ice they were walking on cracked.
Deputies Owens and Muhammad immediately jumped into the frozen pond, demonstrating immense courage and quick thinking. They administered CPR until further assistance arrived. Shelby County Commission Chairwoman Shante K. Avant lauded their bravery and commitment. Despite suffering from hypothermia and asthma himself, Deputy Muhammad emphasized the teamwork involved, including the fire department and other deputies.
A prayer was offered for the seven-year-old boy, who remained hospitalized as of the commission meeting. The rescue took place under challenging conditions of frigid temperatures and limited visibility, highlighting the deputies' unwavering dedication to saving lives.
