24 Sep
Summary
- Work on Ecclesall Road safety begins January 2027.
- £1.42m allocated for high-collision rate road improvements.
- New 20mph zone and speed cameras to enhance safety.
Safety improvements on Sheffield's Ecclesall Road are scheduled to begin in January 2027, thanks to £1.42 million in confirmed government funding. This initiative addresses high collision rates on the A625 stretch between the A61 and B6375 near Whirlow.
The project will introduce a new 20mph speed limit between Pear Street and Hunters Bar roundabout, extending the current 30mph limit further along. Average speed cameras, vehicle-activated signs, and an upgraded pedestrian crossing are also part of the planned enhancements.
Further safety measures are planned for other Sheffield roads, including the A61 Chesterfield Road, which has received a conditional offer of £5.5 million. Redesigned junctions and central road markings will improve traffic flow on Ecclesall Road, with detailed designs now complete.
