A 10-year-old girl has made a remarkable recovery after her hand was reattached following a severe shark attack. The incident occurred in June when Leah Lendel was snorkeling with her family off Boca Grande, Florida, and was bitten by a 9ft bull shark. Her right hand was left severely damaged, hanging by shreds of skin, but immediate assistance from bystanders and first responders helped stabilize her condition.
Leah was airlifted to Tampa General Hospital where surgeons performed a "miracle" six-hour operation to reattach her hand. Astonishingly, she regained movement in two fingers within 24 hours, and sensation and movement in all fingers followed within two days. Surgeons used arteries from her leg to repair the extensive damage, a procedure described as a testament to survival and strength.
Now undergoing intensive physical therapy, Leah is regaining function and has even resumed her passion for knitting, creating outfits for her Barbie dolls. A GoFundMe campaign has been established to assist with her substantial medical bills, which was nearing $60,000 as of Tuesday.
