Triathlete's Fatal Shark Bite: Autopsy Reveals Horrific Details

In a tragic incident on December 21, 2025, 55-year-old Erica Fox, an accomplished triathlete and experienced open-water swimmer, lost her life following a shark attack in California's Monterey Bay. Newly released autopsy findings have illuminated the devastating nature of the encounter.

The autopsy report indicates that a single, powerful bite inflicted severe injuries, including fracturing Ms. Fox's pelvis in multiple places and severing a major artery. These injuries, extending from her knee to her abdomen, caused her wetsuit to tear in corresponding areas. Tragically, the severity of the bite left her submerged, leading to her drowning, in addition to the sharp and blunt-force trauma.

Ms. Fox disappeared while swimming with the Kelp Krawlers, a group she helped establish, near Lovers Point Beach. A witness reported seeing a shark leap from the water around the same time, appearing to have a person in its mouth. Despite extensive search efforts by emergency crews and specialized dive teams lasting nearly 15 hours, her body was discovered six days later.

Friends remember Erica Fox as a joyful and kind individual who embraced challenges, including completing multiple Half-Ironman races and participating in the Escape from Alcatraz triathlon for nearly two decades. Her death marks the third shark attack linked to Lovers Point since June 2022, underscoring the inherent risks of open-water environments.
