Five senior citizens were injured when a gazebo suddenly collapsed in Mala Garden, Pratiksha Nagar, Sion, on Wednesday afternoon. The victims, aged between 64 and 79, were seated under the structure when it gave way, resulting in leg fractures and head injuries for some. All five are reported to be in stable condition at Sion Hospital.
Local residents expressed concern, alleging that complaints regarding the gazebo's condition had been made to the BMC in recent months but were not addressed. The garden, popular among over 150 daily visitors, had undergone renovations a few years ago. Investigations are underway, with CT scans being performed on patients as a precautionary measure.
One of the injured seniors discharged herself against medical advice, while the others remain hospitalized. The incident highlights potential safety concerns in public spaces, with residents also noting other structures in the garden requiring maintenance.
