A 42-year-old driver, K. Murugan, miraculously escaped unhurt on Friday when the scrap vehicle he was towing burst into flames. The incident occurred on the Chennai-Bengaluru National Highway (NH-48) near Shenbakkam, within Vellore Corporation limits.
The fire began when the tyres of the scrap SUV made contact with its metal frame while being towed to a dismantling yard. Although smoke emanated from the rear tyres, the driver did not notice it until alerted by other motorists.
Demonstrating quick reflexes, Murugan steered his vehicle to the roadside and promptly disconnected it from the burning SUV. A team of six firefighters from Vellore town station responded to the scene and worked for approximately an hour to extinguish the fire, which completely destroyed the scrap vehicle.
The incident, which happened around 8:30 a.m., caused no traffic disruptions due to the low volume of vehicles at that hour. Vellore North police have registered a case and are conducting an ongoing investigation into the cause.
