Tragedy has befallen a young family in Sault Ste. Marie following a devastating collision that occurred on the evening of Jan. 7. Wendy Hinan and her two-year-old son, Devereaux, were en route home when their vehicle was struck head-on by a van. Hinan, who was seven months pregnant, sustained severe injuries and underwent an emergency C-section. Her newborn daughter, Verena, was airlifted to Toronto for specialized care, but her prognosis remains uncertain.
Devereaux, sadly, passed away while receiving care at SickKids. Police are investigating the collision, with initial findings indicating the van was traveling at a high speed and crossed into an oncoming lane. The 43-year-old driver of the van has not been publicly identified, and their condition is unknown.
The family's personal injury lawyer estimates potential damages exceeding $20 million, though acknowledges realistic payouts may fall short. In the interim, the family can access no-fault accident benefits for ongoing medical expenses. The lawyer highlighted this as the "saddest situation" he has encountered in 25 years, urging public support for the family's GoFundMe page.
