Satellites Map Venezuela Quake Devastation

Satellite technology is significantly aiding Venezuela's rescue and recovery operations after two earthquakes struck on June 24. Space agencies are providing critical imagery and data to emergency responders and the government.

The Copernicus satellite system, activated in emergency mapping mode, has generated numerous maps that reveal the extent of damage and terrain shifts. These products help identify safe landing zones for aircraft involved in rescue and aid delivery. Initial assessments show severe damage in La Guaira and Greater Caracas, affecting approximately 1,300 buildings as of June 27.

NASA's Disaster Response Coordination System is also contributing, using data from missions like NISAR to map surface displacement caused by the earthquakes. This initiative includes a pilot project that uses radar images to assess previously identified areas, assessing potential damage or destruction to tens of thousands of buildings with high accuracy.

Peru's National Commission for Aerospace Research and Development has also shared satellite data, assisting the Bolivarian Agency for Space Activities. This data includes visualizations of ground deformation along the San Sebastián Fault, offering insights into the seismic activity. The United Nations Development Program is utilizing an AI-powered tool that combines satellite imagery with GIS technology to estimate direct physical damage at $6.7 billion, equivalent to 6 percent of Venezuela's GDP.
