Saskatchewan Battles Wildfires and Floods Simultaneously
10 Jul
Summary
- 72 active wildfires and 12 flood-related local emergencies strain resources.
- Fewer, smaller fires than last year, but with same heat intensity.
- Temporary bridges deployed for flood-damaged roads; permanent repairs pending.
Saskatchewan is currently facing a significant dual crisis, with 72 wildfires active across the province and 12 local emergencies declared due to flooding. The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency (SPSA) reports that while the number and size of fires are less than last year, their heat intensity remains high. Nine fires are uncontained, and 46 are under assessment, with nine focused on protecting infrastructure.
Meanwhile, flooding has led to road washouts, prompting the Highways Ministry to install temporary bridges on routes like Highway 49. Permanent repairs are on hold until water levels recede and assessments can be completed. The Provincial Disaster Assistance Program (PDAP) is in the assessment phase, with engineers evaluating damages in affected communities. Despite receding water levels in some areas, local emergencies remain in effect, indicating an ongoing challenge.
Firefighting conditions are mixed. While increased humidity and some precipitation offer brief reprieves, hot and humid weather poses difficulties for crews working in rough terrain. Despite these challenges, conditions are generally more favorable than last year's drought. The SPSA emphasizes that the province is not yet out of the woods concerning these combined natural events.
