On Saturday, March 16, 2024, a peaceful afternoon in San Francisco's West Portal neighborhood was shattered by a horrific accident. A family, celebrating their fourth wedding anniversary with plans for a trip to the zoo, became victims when a speeding white Mercedes S.U.V. lost control.
The vehicle reportedly traveled at highway speeds before jumping the sidewalk. It then struck a street pole, destroyed a bolted-down garbage can, and obliterated the bus stop where the family waited. The SUV's destructive path ended after crashing into a fire hydrant.
Witnesses described the devastating aftermath, with the father, Diego Cardoso de Oliveira, being propelled over 100 feet from the impact. The mother, Matilde Ramos Pinto, was found trapped in the wreckage, conscious but in and out of awareness. A nearby bystander, Rolf O'Grady, rushed to her side, offering comfort and reassurance about her baby's safety.
