Recent months have seen a dramatic rise in bear attacks across Russia, with TASS estimating 17 fatalities. These incidents have primarily occurred in the Siberian and Far Eastern federal districts. The Krasnoyarsk Region has borne the brunt of these attacks, reporting six deaths. Three fatalities each have been recorded in the Tomsk and Irkutsk Regions, with two in Buryatia.
Contributing factors to this surge include widespread forest fires in the Krasnoyarsk Region and a poor pine nut harvest, pushing bears into closer proximity with human settlements. The most recent attack, on September 23, involved a guard at a northern Krasnoyarsk Region truck parking lot. Bears have been observed in residential areas, near schools and military facilities, and even in popular tourist spots.
Several regions have implemented emergency measures. A heightened-alert regime is in effect across the Irkutsk Region, and a curfew is active in Baikalsk. In Abaza, Khakassia, bears have reportedly put the city under a "de facto siege," prompting authorities to consider extending the heightened-alert regime to the entire republic.
