Tragedy struck the Bucegi Mountains in Romania on July 11 when a 36-year-old climber lost her life after a 33-foot fall. The woman was with three companions, including an instructor, in the Valea Albă area when their shared belay device failed, causing the entire group to fall.
Despite initial reports suggesting an accident due to equipment failure, police have initiated a criminal investigation. The probe will focus on determining if manslaughter or negligent bodily harm occurred.
Rescuers, including those from four helicopters, faced difficult conditions to reach the climbers. The extraction process took three hours. While all climbers were conscious immediately after the fall, the condition of the 36-year-old, identified as a dentist and mountaineer, deteriorated, leading to her death. The other three climbers were transported to hospitals in Bucharest and Brașov.
