A man was dramatically rescued Friday after his car plunged into the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, trapping him as the vehicle sank. Bystanders near Temple University's boathouse heard the crash and witnessed the red car entering the water.
Several individuals, including a member of the national rowing team, immediately responded. One rower swam to the rapidly sinking car and, with the help of others, managed to pull the driver through an open window. A rowing coach then assisted in bringing the group to safety via boat.
The driver was transported to a hospital for medical treatment. Police divers later located and recovered the submerged vehicle from the river bottom. Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the incident.
