24 Feb
Summary
- Over 45 vehicles were reported disabled on roads due to severe weather.
- A travel ban issued at 7 p.m. Sunday night was violated by many drivers.
- First offenses for violating the ban incur an $85 fine; a second offense is arrestable.

Rhode Island authorities reported significant challenges on roads due to treacherous conditions and a travel ban. As of Tuesday morning, February 24, 2026, at 8:15 a.m., state police had responded to 45 disabled vehicles. Major Erik Yanyar emphasized the extreme danger of driving and pleaded with the public to remain off highways.
The travel ban, implemented at 7 p.m. Sunday night, was disregarded by numerous drivers, including some essential workers attempting to reach their jobs. State troopers have already issued five tickets for non-compliance, with three involving tractor-trailers crossing the state line from Connecticut. This number is expected to increase as patrols continue.
Penalties for violating the ban are severe. The first offense results in an $85 ticket. A subsequent violation carries the risk of arrest. While authorities aim to exercise discretion, particularly for essential personnel, they are determined to enforce the ban to ensure public safety.
Troopers have been actively patrolling major highways since Sunday night, rotating shifts to manage the difficult situation. They are also assisting with issues on secondary roads and will soon escort Rhode Island Energy trucks for downed power line repairs when conditions permit.
