South Wales Fire and Rescue Service is continuing to battle a significant wildfire in the Rhondda area, which commenced on Saturday afternoon. The fire has affected an estimated 150 hectares of forestry plantation and common land, involving bracken, scrub, and vegetation.
Crews have been working continuously under challenging conditions on steep terrain, creating firebreaks to contain the spread and safeguard nearby communities. However, changing wind conditions on Sunday evening led to an increase in firefighting activity and resources. The incident has been declared a major incident due to the demand on resources and coordination required.
Currently, 20 fire engines are on scene, supported by two specialist wildfire teams, senior officers, a high-volume pumping unit, and drone capability. Partner agencies including Natural Resources Wales, South Wales Police, and Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council are collaborating on the response.
A rest centre has been established at Rhondda Fach Leisure Centre for residents of Blaenllechau/Ferndale who may be concerned about poor air quality. Evacuation is not currently mandatory, but the centre offers a refuge for those wishing to leave their homes. The incident is expected to persist for several days, with ongoing updates to follow.
