A significant fire erupted Monday night atop the Raleigh Convention Center, sending smoke billowing into the sky and visible for miles. The blaze, which occurred on the roof of the expansive 500,000-square-foot structure, was successfully extinguished by emergency responders. Officials confirmed the fire was contained solely to the roof area, with no damage to the interior of the building.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, though preliminary information suggests a potential "natural gas incident" connected to the building's HVAC system. During the incident, streets surrounding the convention center were temporarily closed to facilitate emergency operations and ensure public safety. Fortunately, all security personnel present in the building were able to exit without harm.
No injuries have been reported in connection with the incident. While the flames are out, white smoke continued to rise from the roof past 11 p.m. as authorities managed the aftermath. The event caused temporary disruptions to traffic in the downtown area.
