E-Bike Batteries Spark Fire Hazard Warning
25 Nov
Summary
- CPSC warns Rad Power e-bike batteries may ignite or explode.
- Thirty-one fire incidents linked to batteries, some not charging.
- Company disputes CPSC claims, citing financial distress.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has issued a stark warning to Rad Power Bikes e-bike owners, stating their batteries pose a significant risk of fire, explosion, and serious harm.
The commission has linked these hazardous batteries to 31 reported fire incidents, with some fires occurring even when the batteries were not actively charging. The CPSC noted that Rad Power has refused to agree to an acceptable recall, citing the company's dire financial circumstances.
Rad Power, however, firmly disputes the CPSC's characterization of its batteries as unsafe. The company claims it offered solutions, such as upgrading customers to newer batteries, but these were rejected by the CPSC. Rad Power stated the cost of the commission's demands would force an immediate shutdown, leaving no way to support riders or employees.
