Summary

- The father seeks clarity on the circumstances of his son's death.
- Children continue to swim in the dangerous quarry despite the tragedy.
The father of George Cuckoo, a 15-year-old boy who drowned in a flooded quarry, has stated that the circumstances of his son's death remain unclear. George was swimming with friends in hot weather on May 27th when he got into difficulty in the Blue Lake, a 65m-long muddy lake in Swanscombe, Kent. His friends attempted to help him but were unsuccessful. Emergency services were called after George had been submerged for seven minutes, and his body was recovered hours later. The cause of death was recorded as drowning.
An inquest heard that George's father, Simon Cuckoo, noted differing accounts from police and ambulance services regarding his son's final moments. Formal statements were reportedly not taken from the two friends present to avoid further distress. The property owner of the lake remains unknown to the police, and the lake is accessible through a broken fence, making it a popular, albeit dangerous, swimming spot. Tragically, Simon Cuckoo also revealed that children are still swimming in the lake despite his son's fatal incident.
