A powerful magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck Qinghai province in northwestern China on Tuesday, claiming at least one life and injuring four people. The seismic event occurred in a high-altitude area of Haixi prefecture at a depth of 10 kilometers, at 5:06 p.m. Beijing time.
Rescue efforts are underway to find any survivors who might be trapped. State media reported that all workers in nearby coal mines have been evacuated, and damage assessments are in progress. Over a dozen aftershocks, including one of magnitude 4.9, followed the initial quake.
Authorities have responded by dispatching essential supplies such as tents, beds, blankets, food, and water to the affected areas. Initial reports indicated that transport, communication, and utility lines within a 50 km radius of the epicenter were functioning normally. The quake's epicenter was near Da Qaidam, a locality close to the popular tourist attraction, Emerald Lake.
