Canal Collapse Floods Pune: Was Negligence to Blame?
27 Mar
Summary
- An unattended sewage pipeline caused a canal embankment to erode.
- The canal breach led to severe flooding in Magarpatta and nearby areas.
- Officials issued show-cause notices to engineers following the incident.

A significant canal breach occurred, inundating Magarpatta and nearby localities with floodwaters. Officials from the water resources department attributed the collapse to an unattended sewage pipeline laid by the PMC, which caused gradual erosion of the canal embankment. This negligence led to the eventual breach.
Emergency repair operations were initiated immediately, involving the dumping of soil and stones to halt the water flow. Following this, full-scale restoration work commenced on Wednesday, progressing rapidly. Irrigation water supply to rural areas is expected to resume upon completion of these repairs.
The flooding turned roads into rivers, submerging several houses and companies in the Hadapsar industrial estate. Major traffic disruptions were reported on the Pune-Solapur highway and Magarpatta-Kharadi road.
The incident prompted strong reactions, with discussions held in the PMC general body meeting and the state assembly. The superintendent engineer of the Khadakwasla project issued show-cause notices to the executive, deputy, and junior engineers involved.
PMC drainage officials, however, denied responsibility, stating the pipeline was laid long ago and work was completed as per the water resource department's requirements. They questioned the timing of the blame directed at the PMC.
