Portugal Wildfires Threaten Summer Holidays
3 Jul
Summary
- Over 1,000 firefighters combat blazes north of Porto.
- Red heat alert declared; 12 districts face extreme temperatures.
- Possibility of deliberate criminal activity behind fires.

An urgent travel warning has been issued to British nationals planning to visit Portugal this summer, as devastating wildfires spread across the nation. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) alerted travelers to the escalating situation.
Currently, over 1,000 firefighters are actively engaged in combating significant blazes situated just north of Porto. The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere has declared a red heat alert, affecting 12 of the country's 18 districts. This alert, in effect from Thursday, July 2nd, until at least Saturday, July 4th, forecasts a persistent spell of extremely high temperatures, impacting both daytime and overnight conditions.
Six remaining regions are under an orange alert, which heightens the wildfire threat. The FCDO highlights a high risk of wildfires from April to October due to hot and dry weather, emphasizing that these fires are dangerous and unpredictable. Portuguese authorities may implement evacuations and road closures for safety. There is also speculation from the Minister of Internal Administration regarding deliberate criminal activity, as fires reportedly started during the night, an unusual occurrence.
