Abandoned Village Sealed as Sea Reclaims Coastline
3 Jul
Summary
- Podampeta village entry sealed due to severe coastal erosion.
- Relocated residents' abandoned houses attracted tourists.
- Eight villages in Ganjam block are threatened by erosion.
The Ganjam district administration took decisive action on Friday by sealing entry to Podampeta, an abandoned seaside village in Ganjam block. This measure was implemented due to significant coastal erosion that has intensified recently. Although residents were relocated years ago, the village's vacant houses and proximity to the advancing sea had made it a draw for tourists.
Officials have erected barricades at the village entrance to prevent public access, prioritizing safety as large crowds had gathered to witness the sea's impact. A viral social media video showing a concrete structure being battered by high waves prompted further intervention. While damaged structures are abandoned, some fishermen continued to use houses for storing fishing equipment.
This sealing addresses growing concerns over coastal erosion, which Surath Pahan, former chairman of Ganjam block, stated threatens at least eight villages in the area. He attributed the alarming erosion rate to rough seas and high tidal waves. A Member of Parliament has urged the collector for immediate emergency response team deployment, property damage assessment, financial aid, and permanent rehabilitation measures for affected coastal residents.
