Landslide Creates Massive River Lake, Villages Threatened
8 Jul
Summary
- Landslide formed an 800-meter-high lake on the Ramganga River.
- Five villages are at risk, threatening 600 to 700 residents.
- Temporary bridges washed away, disrupting travel between districts.

Continuous rainfall in Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand, has caused a substantial landslide that has blocked the Ramganga River near Haradiya on the Thal-Munsiyari motor road.
This geological event has resulted in the formation of a lake approximately 600 meters long, with its water level rising to about 800 meters as of Sunday. The expanding lake is encroaching towards Bhaiskot village, placing an estimated 600 to 700 people across five villages in danger.
The administration has intensified surveillance in the affected areas due to the escalating risk. Furthermore, the rising water levels have submerged temporary bridges over the Ramganga, which were crucial for daily commuting between Pithoragarh and Bageshwar districts, forcing residents onto extended alternative routes.
