Summary
- A seven-year-old boy died after a pit bull attack.
- The dog had a known history of behavioral issues.
- Shelter staff expressed concerns about the dog's aggression.

In Gunnison, Colorado, a devastating incident occurred on February 4 when a seven-year-old boy, Leelan Lokie, was fatally mauled by a pit bull named Boaz. The 86-pound dog attacked the child inside his home. Police intervention, involving a gunshot to make the animal release its grip, proved insufficient to save Leelan, who later died at the hospital.
Investigations classified the attack as a Level 6 on the Dunbar Bite Scale, the highest severity. Boaz had a documented history of behavioral problems, with Montrose Animal Shelter staff expressing significant concerns. Emails revealed staff members referred to the dog as a 'monster' and worried about 'unfortunate outcomes,' including severe injury or death.
Despite plans for euthanasia due to aggression towards other dogs and a past incident where the dog fractured a volunteer's wrist, the Montrose Bully Breed Club rehomed Boaz. The club had assured city officials of the dog's good temperament. No criminal charges have been filed in connection with the tragic event. A GoFundMe campaign has since been established to support Leelan's mother and brother, raising over $137,000.
