Philippines on High Alert as Typhoon Fung-wong Threatens Devastating Landfall
8 Nov
Summary
- Typhoon Fung-wong, known locally as Uwan, expected to intensify into a super typhoon
- Residents in low-lying and coastal areas urged to evacuate before the storm's arrival
- Rescue operations suspended following the passage of Typhoon Kalmaegi, which killed over 200 people

As of November 8th, 2025, the Philippines is on high alert for the impending arrival of Typhoon Fung-wong, a powerful storm that is forecast to intensify into a super typhoon before making landfall on the island of Luzon. The Philippine meteorological service, Pagasa, has warned that Fung-wong, known locally as Uwan, will bring sustained winds of at least 185 km/h (115 mph) and pose a significant threat of life-threatening storm surges and heavy rainfall.
The news comes less than a week after the country was devastated by Typhoon Kalmaegi, one of the strongest storms to hit the Philippines this year. That earlier storm killed at least 204 people and left a trail of destruction, forcing the suspension of ongoing rescue operations. Now, with Fung-wong on the horizon, many Filipinos are anxious about the potential for further devastation.
In response, the Philippine government has declared a state of calamity and is taking measures to prepare for the storm's impact. Several schools have cancelled classes or moved them online, while Philippine Airlines has cancelled a number of local flights. Residents in low-lying and coastal areas have been urged to evacuate to higher ground before the storm's arrival, which is expected to occur on Sunday evening local time at the earliest.
