A magnitude 6.7 earthquake, reported by the US Geological Survey, shook Peru's southern Andes Mountains on Thursday. The seismic event occurred at 1pm local time and was centered approximately 38 kilometers northwest of Upahuacho city, within the Parinacochas province of the Ayacucho region.
The earthquake's depth was recorded at 66 kilometers, and its impact was felt in multiple southern Peruvian regions, including Ica and Arequipa. Civil Defense officials and local authorities confirmed that no damage of any kind had been reported. Additionally, the Peruvian Navy stated that there was no tsunami threat.
Preliminary estimates suggest that around 197,000 people experienced moderate shaking, with areas close to the epicenter, such as Coracora, enduring strong tremors. Light shaking was also reported in Cusco and Ayacucho. Structures in the affected region are known to be highly vulnerable to seismic activity, yet initial assessments indicate a low probability of fatalities and economic losses.
