Coffin Plunges into Ravine After Peruvian Bridge Collapse
20 Mar
Summary
- A funeral procession tragically fell into a ravine when a log bridge collapsed in Peru.
- The coffin split open in the rushing water, revealing the body to shocked mourners.
- Miraculously, no mourners were injured, and the coffin was recovered.

A funeral procession in Peru's Cajamarca province faced a terrifying moment when a log bridge catastrophically failed, plunging mourners and the coffin into a ravine below. The group was crossing the precarious structure over a fast-flowing river when it buckled under their weight.
As the coffin tumbled into the water, it split open, revealing the body to the distressed mourners. Screams erupted as they scrambled to secure the casket in the rushing water. Local reports indicate the bridge's deterioration, exacerbated by recent heavy rains and humidity, contributed to the collapse.
Despite the dramatic nature of the event, all approximately a dozen mourners emerged uninjured. Locals managed to recover the coffin from the current before it could be carried further downstream. The National Meteorology and Hydrology Service (Senamhi) had previously issued warnings for the region, including an orange alert for Cajamarca, indicating a high risk of flash floods.
This incident in Peru follows a similar event in Ubá, Brazil, where severe floods breached a funeral home, washing away dozens of coffins and leading to several fatalities and a state of emergency.
