Pembrokeshire Crash: Driver's Alcohol Level Above Limit
5 Nov
Summary
- Driver Aled Coleman's alcohol level exceeded legal limit.
- Inappropriate speed and alcohol consumption caused the fatal crash.
- Neither driver nor passenger wore seatbelts during the incident.
An inquest held at Pembrokeshire County Hall determined that the driver in a fatal road traffic collision last year had exceeded the legal alcohol limit. Aled Coleman, aged 23, and his 18-year-old passenger, Aled Bowen, lost their lives in the incident on the A40 between Haverfordwest and Fishguard on 14 September 2025.
The silver Volkswagen Polo collided with a roadside sign and overturned at approximately 03:13 BST. Forensic Collision Investigator Kevin Hague reported that alcohol consumption and inappropriate speed were significant contributing factors. While the exact speed could not be quantified, it was noted as a causation factor on the 60mph road. Neither friend was wearing a seatbelt.
Senior Coroner Gareth Lewis stated that Aled Coleman died from a traumatic head injury, while Aled Bowen succumbed to multiple traumatic injuries. Eyewitnesses and first responders noted a strong smell of alcohol at the scene, along with debris including alcohol bottles and vapes. Families of both young men described them as kind and sensitive, with bright futures ahead of them.
