Ferry Back: Peel River Crossing Reopens After Cable Snag
10 Jul
Summary
- Peel River ferry on Dempster Highway has resumed operations.
- Ferry was dislodged due to a broken cable last weekend.
- Extended hours were offered on Friday for travelers affected.

Travelers on the Dempster Highway can now cross the Peel River as the M.V. Abraham Francis ferry has resumed its service. The ferry, located near Fort McPherson, N.W.T., had been out of operation since last weekend following a cable failure. This incident caused the ferry to become dislodged from its docking station, leaving many travelers stranded on both sides of the river.
Highways officials in the Northwest Territories confirmed on Thursday that the ferry is back on its regular schedule. For the first day of resumed operations, extended hours were implemented, with the last trip departing from the south shore at 3 a.m. on Friday, later than the usual 12:45 a.m. The ferry's return to service was contingent on the river's water levels decreasing to a safe operating point.
