A 22-year-old passenger, identified as Rain McMillan Walmsey, died on August 7 after experiencing a medical emergency aboard Southwest Flight 958. The flight was en route from Dallas to Los Angeles when Walmsey became unresponsive. Despite attempts to administer CPR on board and the response of paramedics upon landing at Los Angeles International Airport, he could not be revived.
Authorities have listed Walmsey's place of death as 'LAX Southwest plane.' The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's office has deferred the cause of death, indicating that additional investigation is required before a determination can be made. No manner of death has been specified at this time.
This incident follows other recent fatalities on commercial flights. In January 2025, a 53-year-old woman died on an Air France flight from Paris to Boston due to a suspected medical episode. In June 2024, an 8-year-old girl became unresponsive before a plane diverted to Illinois, and another passenger died on a flight to San Francisco that same month.
