Lost Pan Am Plane Wreck Found After 74 Years

The wreckage of Pan Am flight 526A, which crashed off Puerto Rico 74 years ago, has been discovered. This incident in 1952, which resulted in 52 fatalities, was a catalyst for implementing mandatory pre-flight safety briefings and improved flotation devices that are standard today. Explorers recently located the DC-4's fuselage and tail using an autonomous sonar drone, 74 years after the crash. Russ Matthews' dedicated research, inspired by a washed-up luggage tag, combined with historical records and pilot maps, narrowed down the search area. An advanced underwater drone from Deep Sea Vision, a company with a personal connection to Pan Am, successfully located the wreckage in just 10 square nautical miles. This discovery could offer closure for families of victims from other ocean disasters, such as Malaysia Airlines Flight 370. An episode detailing this finding is expected to air in the fall.
