Pakistan Warns of Glacial Lake Floods
2 May
Summary
- Alert issued for glacial lake outburst floods in upper regions.
- Over 7.1 million people in GB and KP are vulnerable.
- Pakistan holds largest glacier reservoir outside polar regions.

An alert for glacial lake outburst floods (Glof) has been issued for Pakistan's upper regions, specifically Gilgit-Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. This warning, issued by the Pakistan Meteorological Department, anticipates a moderate westerly wave bringing rain and thunderstorms this weekend. These conditions are expected to significantly elevate the risk of Glofs and flash flooding in vulnerable areas.
Glacial lake outburst floods involve the sudden release of water and debris from glacial lakes, posing a severe threat to mountain communities. Over 7.1 million people in Gilgit-Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are identified as vulnerable to this phenomenon. Residents in affected valleys are urged to take immediate precautions, including securing livestock and essentials on higher ground and monitoring local water bodies for signs of danger.
Pakistan is home to over 13,032 glaciers, representing the most extensive glacier collection outside the polar regions. However, climate change-induced temperature rises are causing about 10,000 glaciers in Chitral and Gilgit-Baltistan to recede. The National Emergencies Operation Centre had previously advised of potential Glof risks through September 2026, citing rising temperatures and changing weather patterns.
