At least 10 individuals died in a major fire that erupted in the trauma centre of a government hospital in India's eastern state of Odisha. The devastating incident occurred early Monday morning in Cuttack city at the Srirama Chandra Bhanja Medical College and Hospital. All fatalities were patients admitted to the facility.
An electrical short circuit is the suspected cause of the fire, which broke out between 2:30 am and 3:00 am. Tragically, seven seriously ill patients died during their transfer to other intensive care units and wards, with three more succumbing later. Twenty-three hospital staff were injured while attempting to rescue patients, with five in critical condition.
State Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced Rs25,00,000 in compensation for the families of the deceased and visited the hospital to review the situation. A judicial probe has been initiated to investigate the cause, and strict action will be taken against those found responsible.
