A New York City commuter, John Toledo, 61, remarkably escaped serious injury on Thursday morning when a substantial concrete slab unexpectedly fell from the ceiling of a Manhattan tunnel. The incident occurred around 6:00 am on the Trans-Manhattan Expressway, a section of I-95.
The falling debris struck Toledo's vehicle, causing a tire to blow out, but he fortunately emerged from the ordeal unscathed. Dashcam footage captured the alarming moment the slab descended directly in front of his car.
Following the close call, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which oversees the George Washington Bridge and the tunnel, stated that additional overnight inspections of the ceiling panels would commence. These inspections are intended to allow for thorough examinations and any necessary immediate repairs.
Toledo expressed his relief at being alive and his hope that responsible parties would inspect the structure to prevent future occurrences, primarily seeking coverage for his car repairs.
