Emergency services in the Northern Territory have been engaged in extensive rescue operations due to severe flooding that inundated Katherine, with water levels not seen since the 1990s. Sen Const Ben Parfitt described the situation as "worse than the worst-case scenario" predicted by meteorologists.
During one 24-hour period, rescue efforts focused on assisting stranded residents. This included ferrying two dozen school children and their teachers from a caravan park that was waist-deep in water, as well as rescuing a couple and their German shepherd from the roof of a four-wheel drive. The latter rescue, involving the dog named Seven, was widely shared online.
Hundreds of homes and businesses across parts of the NT and Queensland have been affected by flooding, leading to over 1,000 evacuations. The extreme weather has also impacted wildlife, with crocodiles sighted in residential streets in Katherine. In Bundaberg, Queensland, numerous boats were swept away, with some found miles from the water.
Volunteer efforts have been crucial, with services like Heli-Muster NT transforming into emergency response units, assisting in evacuations and supply deliveries for stranded families and animals. The cleanup process has begun, with volunteers like Ben Hockey helping residents salvage what they can and begin the arduous task of recovery.
