Newport Beach braces for king tides, declares emergency
20 Oct
Summary
- Emergency declared ahead of anticipated king tides and coastal flooding.
- Sand replenishment project to reinforce beaches against erosion.
- Residents urged to take proactive measures to protect homes and property.
Newport Beach has proactively declared a local emergency and activated its Emergency Operations Center in preparation for anticipated coastal flooding. Exceptionally high tides are expected between Monday and Wednesday of next week, with similar king tide events predicted to continue into the new year.
A contract has been approved for the West Newport Beach Sand Replenishment Project, which will deposit approximately 100,000 cubic yards of sand along eroded beach areas. This crucial project aims to restore defenses against recent storm damage and is scheduled to commence next week.
The city anticipates that these upcoming king tides could lead to flooding in low-lying areas such as the Balboa Peninsula and Newport Harbor islands. Following a recent disruptive flooding incident on the Balboa Peninsula, Newport Beach is reinforcing beach berms and strategically placing sandbags. Residents are strongly advised to implement protective measures, including sandbagging vulnerable openings and relocating vehicles from flood-prone streets. Free sandbags are available at several city locations to assist residents in safeguarding their properties.
