A remarkable rescue unfolded on Friday as 30-year-old Sanjay Sah was found alive after being trapped for nine days in a tunnel at Nepal's Trishuli 3A hydropower project. Sah credited his survival to continuously chanting the Hare Krishna mahamantra. His miraculous rescue occurred on Krishna Janmashtami, a significant festival celebrating the birth of Lord Krishna.
Sah was among two workers pulled from the site following a flash flood on August 26 that inundated the Trishuli River corridor. Mechanical supervisor Kabir Maharjan, 45, was also rescued and airlifted to Kathmandu for treatment. Sah, a foreman, initially stayed behind in the control room due to his sense of responsibility for others, but found himself unable to escape as the floodwaters surged.
Despite his own rescue, Sah expressed concern that others might still be trapped deeper within the extensive tunnel system. The operation to find survivors was intensified by Nepal's security forces using specialized equipment. The successful extraction of Sah and Maharjan offered a much-needed glimmer of hope amidst one of Nepal's most devastating recent disasters, where hundreds remain missing and over 1,250 lives have been lost.
