Himalayan Floods: Hundreds Missing After Glacier Collapse

Hundreds remain missing following devastating flash floods that impacted the border region between Nepal and China. In Nepal, nearly 1,000 people are still unaccounted for, while China reports over 550 missing. Authorities have warned of potential further flooding along the Bhotekoshi River due to a burst water dam on the Tibetan side, urging rescue teams to remain vigilant.

The disaster is believed to have been triggered by a landslide from a collapsing glacier, with geoscientists identifying it as a 'glacial collapse and debris flow.' This event unleashed a torrent of water, rock, mud, and ice that swept through the area, causing extensive damage to homes and infrastructure. Over 660 tourists from approximately 30 countries are among the missing, many of whom were on a pilgrimage to Mount Kailash.

Recovery operations are underway, with approximately 15,000 personnel deployed in Nepal, including army soldiers. China has pledged emergency aid to Nepal and is cooperating with international rescue efforts. However, unsettled weather, including monsoonal rains, continues to affect Nepal, raising concerns about continued flooding and landslides, which could further challenge ongoing recovery work.
