Nepal Bus Plunges 200m, Killing 19 Tourists
23 Feb
Summary
- Nineteen people died when a tourist bus fell 200m in Nepal.
- The bus was traveling from Pokhara to the capital, Kathmandu.
- Road accidents are common in Nepal due to poor infrastructure.

Nineteen individuals perished when a tourist bus veered off a mountain road and plunged 200 meters near the Trishuli river in Nepal's central Dhading district. The ill-fated journey, originating from the popular tourist spot Pokhara, was bound for the capital, Kathmandu. The bus carried 44 people in total, including the driver, with 25 sustaining injuries in the early Monday morning accident.
Among the deceased, authorities have identified nine victims so far, with investigations underway to identify the remaining passengers. The injured include a Chinese national and a New Zealander, all of whom have been transported to hospitals in Kathmandu for treatment. This incident highlights the persistent dangers of road travel in Nepal, where poor road conditions and challenging mountainous geography contribute to frequent accidents.
A similar tragedy occurred earlier in 2026 when a bus traveling from Pokhara to Kathmandu fell into the Marsyangdi river, resulting in at least 14 fatalities. Nepal's tourism sector, a significant revenue generator, heavily relies on its access to the Himalayan mountain range, including Mount Everest, drawing numerous international visitors for mountaineering expeditions.
