A devastating car accident on Sunday claimed the life of LaDonna Craig, a captain for the No Coast Roller Derby team in Lincoln, Nebraska. The incident occurred during a severe winter storm that brought whiteout conditions to the region.
Craig, known in the roller derby circuit as 'Stormsteris,' was traveling west on Highway 34 near Malcolm when she lost control of her vehicle. Her car entered the eastbound lanes and collided with an oncoming Ford F-150. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver and passenger of the F-150 sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to a Lincoln hospital. The crash happened around 3:32 PM on Sunday, with state troopers, local fire departments, and the sheriff's office responding.
Craig was an integral part of the No Coast Roller Derby team, joining in 2011 and serving as captain in 2015 and 2017. Her involvement extended beyond playing; she also officiated, coached the junior team, and participated in regional events. She was also a member of the Women's Flat Track Derby Association.
Her team expressed profound grief on Instagram, remembering her as an "amazing roller derby icon and friend." A GoFundMe campaign, set up to aid her family, quickly surpassed its $5,555 goal, raising over $6,000 in honor of her derby number, #5.
The same storm that led to Craig's death was responsible for several other crashes across the state, including a significant pileup on Interstate 80 involving 30 to 40 vehicles.
