Navi Mumbai Bikers Shocked by Electrified Waters

Two young women were hospitalized on Wednesday after suffering an electric shock from an exposed wire while cycling through a waterlogged road in Navi Mumbai. The incident happened during heavy rainfall that had been battering the city since the previous night. Preliminary reports indicate that rainwater accumulated under the Nerul LP Bridge became electrified due to a short circuit, leading to the women receiving a shock and falling from their bike. A viral video showed a passerby using a tree branch to rescue them. They were subsequently transported to DY Patil Hospital for medical treatment.

Navi Mumbai Mayor Sujata Patil confirmed that the women are out of immediate danger and are under medical observation. She visited the accident site, expressing concern over inadequate safety protocols during the monsoon. The Mayor has ordered an investigation into the cause of the short circuit and any identified safety lapses. She also instructed municipal electrical engineers to promptly repair exposed wires and faulty equipment to prevent recurrence.

This incident occurred as Mumbai and its suburbs experienced intense rainfall, with several areas receiving over 100 mm of rain in the 24 hours ending Wednesday morning. The downpour caused waterlogging in various low-lying areas, including the Andheri subway, necessitating traffic diversions. Transport services were affected, with delays on suburban train services and disruptions on the Harbour line due to a snapped overhead wire. The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation has deployed its machinery and emergency teams to manage rain-related situations.
